The Reel Snow White

The Reel Snow White is our joyous gift. The weekly communication groups, through Northeast Hearing & Speech, facilitate nonverbal and verbal social language understanding. At the Community Partners’ day program, in addition to our other activities, we began rehearsing this 40-year old script, inspired by French clown Jacques LeCoq, and written by John Lepiarz. It was an excellent vehicle to work on our individual communication abilities, and as an ensemble. With over a year of practicing, we delighted in this challenging and triumphant collaboration. Thanks to grants from the Warren Memorial Foundation, the Puffin Foundation, and the George Ramlose Foundation, we were able to hire Carlos Cuellar and Mary Levanti-Cuellar of Catama Productions, with Casey Ledoux for original music. The Maine Arts Commission funded a screening and panel discussion at the Portland Museum of Art. In January 2016, eight participants, three staff, and I went to a real film studio that had many cameras, lights, green screen, costumes, and multiple takes. We rose to the occasion, did our best, and shared an amazing experience. With no prince to save the day, our film shares the premise that you can be whatever you want to be.
